I mean the people who passed on hundreds of years ago and are now spirits and ghosts haunting buildings and grounds, etc. What do they do all day long?

Like deities, they are imaginary, so I guess they do the same thing that imaginary deities, devils, spooks do.

Pace the ancient halls wringing their hands and wailing:

"Just LOOK at that wallpaper!"

They're earthbound spirits, who believe they're still alive. And they are still alive, however, without a physical body.

This is what happens to people who don't want to believe in another world beyond this one.

Remember that old bible quote... where your treasures are, you will be also.

Well, that applies to this. If you loved your home and you didn't believe in anything else, you may still be living there for years after you die. The fact that your house has been sold and someone else lives there now and is sleeping in your bedroom, well, that's what happens.

See why it's best to believe in something than nada?

What do extremely bored people do all night? They start threads asking what ghosts do all day. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I don't believe in ghosts myself, but people I care about do and I respect that.

As the idea of ghosts is that they are dead people I imagine they do whatever people would do when they're in a situation where they can't interact with anything. (At least anyone living) In that situation I think you might want to be some place with music or entertainment that doesn't require interaction to enjoy. Maybe a movie theater or concert hall. Although some people enjoy "people watching" so maybe a restaurant, bar, or airport. Or if you're of the intellectual sort lecture halls of a University.

Granted for some people the initial urges might be to tell off everyone who angered you or run naked through the streets laughing maniacally or entering top secret facilities or whatever. Or if you're of the more kindhearted sort watching your loved ones and reflecting on your life. Although I think both those things could become painful or dull in time.

I don't see the urge of haunting one specific place unless you have to do that. I think watching the place and world you know drift into memory or oblivion would be rather unpleasant. I'm a homebody, but even I wouldn't want to be stuck in a house or park or whatever for ages on end.

They work on the script for the scary stuff they're going to do at night when the television ghost detectives go looking for them with their tape recorders, cameras, and high tech ghost hunting equipment.

They also spend all day ironing their sheets so they can make a proper appearance at night in old abandoned houses.
