There was a recent article in The New Republic, an American magazine, which claimed some Glasgow neighborhoods have lower life expectancies than Bangladesh! What neighborhoods could they be referring to?

I believe some inner areas of Glasgow have life expectancies as low as 55 or 56 years - lower than Baghdad. Glasgow as a city has the lowest life expectancy in the UK, as does Scotland.

I don't see why an argument has to break out.. he asked a simple question so I gave him a simple answer, there's no more that needs to be said.

no its all true sadly. .the Calton in the eastend of glasgow seemingly has a life expentancy of 50-55. I live near the area and Ive outlived it thankfully but then I dont smoke and hardly drink much.. so that makes a different I would think....

Some parts of the Glasgow area are like a different country to the rest of Scotland.

like most cities it has poorer areas but Glasgow has made great strides in recent years to improve housing, in the worst areas.. what we do with junkies , drunks etc and living the way they do is another matter. but it happens in all cities.. The Irish infiltrated this area of Glasgow over a hundred and fifty years ago, houses were flung up to accommodate them and the place has taken years to try and change..

For me these parts of Glasgow are no worse than cities in the US they have bad districts too.

cant talk for all cities as never been to many, but in some places begging with babies on the ground is commonplace, thankfully theres nothing nearly as bad here.. what happened in the Eastend of Glasgow was the amount of factories built, all very close to tenement housing, with chimeys belting out smoke, carpet factories, dye and cloth weaving. which all caused lung illnesses , this with bad housing might have contributed to the poor health in families in the area..

Much of Glasgow had tenements .... I grew up in one. They were far from unique to the east end. And most of the factories are long gone as is the smoke. What you have in parts of Glasgow is a mix of urban deprivation, poverty and bad life style choices.
