I keep telling the folks here it's only a matter of time before we start celebrating it here like other major US holidays and occasions. Halloweens gotten really big here and the Christmas decorations outside homes? Wasn't like that here when I was a kid. Heck even Valentines day, use to be a time only cards for your honey was available, now there telling us to give them to our teachers, the local dog walker, even our pets.

I blame MTV for the spiral.

Saw a fantastic fireworks display last night in our local town. I was totally unprepared however and turned up with blankets and just me and the kids. People next to me had their chairs, candles and more importantly beer, wine and champagne. Never mind, I'll know for next year.

Sorry about that. Mostly it's gotten out of hand over here and it's become too commercialized. All about MONEY. Halloween costumes, Halloween cards, bigger and better Christmas decorations that take up people's entire lawns, more cards, more presents, kids EXPECT expensive gifts, stores make MORE money. Christmas in the stores starts earlier every year, it starts in September now.

Anyway, the 4th of July is still fun and usually simple and old fashioned. Have a burger and chips/fries and celebrate with us. Have a parade for all we care. LOL

Thanks Raggy Dee Ann. I'll be going to a BBQ / BDay party today. We will eat, drink some beers and probably pick some guitar. I am looking forward to my first trip to the UK or anywhere overseas for that matter. I'll be leaving mid next week. I'm very excited about it. Are there any English holidays we could adopt here in the states. I'm all for more holidays.

You should adopt Boxing Day which is the day after Christmas. Although it is now a day that a lot of people go shopping in the sales, in my family we all get together and have more food and more drinks and usually play silly games. And it is a public holiday in the UK. In the US my husband always takes that day off as it is just too soon to go back to work after Christmas Day.

We don't really have any unique holidays...There's boxing day - the day after christmas, but that's just an extention of christmas. Besides, if we did I can't think of anything Brits would do that would be unique... 4th of July is always great in San Antonio - lived there 1 year and Austin 4years. Stuff yourself with brisket and ribs for me ....

There used to be unique holidays in the past though. I remember reading that the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth I's coronation was celebrated. And then there was Guy Fawkes day, but that's probably not PC anymore

Is the Queen's birthday an official holiday over there?

We still celebrate Guy Fawkes Day - well I have been away for 10 months but I think it is celebrated - you never know in this PC world of ours.

The Queen has an official birthday but the UK doesn't get an official holiday.

Two other good holidays are the Easter ones, Good Friday and Easter Monday.

I always assumed that the monarch had an official holiday...not parades in the streets exactly, but probably shops being closed, that sort of thing.
