It is feasible to live in your RV, be tough in the winter. There is a portapotty guy out here that has a truck, he'll come out and empty your septic, my inlaws have spent summers in my yard in their RV and that was a lot easier than driving to dump! You could get a water tank and find a local farmer with a water truck (used to take water to sheep in the field) to come fill it.

There is not a lot of enforcement per se. nobody is going to tell you to move, just getting the permits is a PITA!

12 miles which way from Beryl Junction? (big difference between Beryl and Beryl Junction).

Most of the area is reached by BlueSky or South Central Communications, anyone else is very sketchy. ATT is taking over the wireless/cell and supposedly putting up towers to cover this area, right now it is Alltel and that has a lot of dead spots out here.

PM me if you want and I'll give you my email addy, as I don't check in here all the time.

Thanks for the input, toby04. I was just looking at the forms on the Internet again and it seems almost too much to deal with.
I had assumed I could get a concrete pad laid down for my motor home to rest on. Now it seems the authorities would not allow even that without a permit.
I wonder if I could get a driveway gravelled without a permit.
I meant 12 miles NORTH of Beryl Junction --then Easterly from there.
I would PM you but I don't know what that means. I would be glad to have your email addy if you are willing to take the time to communicate with me.
I expect to make a visit to my land next month, camp there a couple days.
My hope was to RETIRE there someday, like this year, and live simply off my disability, not to make a career out of building structures there.

PM means "private message", click on my name and and a menu will appear, you can send a message that way. I won't post my email here because I will get spammed (by non members). I'll send you a pm also.

Default Same here!

Hey I hope this thread is still alive. I'm thinking of doing the same thing -Im looking at land in Beryl, UT. I really really want to build one of these:
Earthship Biotecture Green Buildings
I've emailed them and I was told the main issue would be asking if they allowed Rammed Earth construction. But can you think of any other permits that are necessary? The earthship people make it seem like its hard to find places where the regulations allow them to build.
This would be the answer to any water issue. I looked at those applications, but Ive never built a house before so its like a foreign language to me.
Any and all info about building requirements and permits would be appreciated.
Thanks
Eric

Also, do you think I could get away with building one without getting the permits? Will the contractors install systems without permits? Will they snitch?

No licensed professional will risk the license by not pulling permits.

To "Quietlike", about your questions about permits, you could spend some time profitably perusing the Forms for building permits in Iron County. I found the Forms just by browsing the messages on this thread and clicking on the link. I read for e.g. that you cannot dig at all without a permit. But you can lay dry stone and build a small structure for a tool shed on that - I think. I am planning on parking my motor home there on my 20 acres to start with. I am also thinking about selling and moving to Thailand.

I have been looking at the iron county site, I just dont really know what im looking at. But it sounds like Iron county might not be for me and what I am trying to do. It sounds like that people spend more time trying to get permits than they do actually building their structures. I hate the fact that I can own land, but have to get permission to do anything on it -which sounds to me like I dont own it. Such BS. Sorry had to vent.
Has anyone in the area built an underground home or earthship style home in SO. UT?

Im not trying to encourage illegal activity, I just wanted to know the truth behind some statements made on the net.

Hello out there. I have been browsing these threads and I found a mention of a Shipping Container as a temporary dwelling. I had gotten a quote last year for the cost for one delivered from SLC. But, the question they asked was if the soil on my 20 acres plot was hard enough for the weight of the delivery vehicle. My lot is 3 miles due East of Beryl - 7 miles from Hwy 18 by the dirt roads. SO, what I would like to understand is if the soil needs to be compacted, graded, gravelled or what? The container co. said they require a driveway 150 feet in length. I believe there is little difference in the soil from one lot to another over this county.
The question is directed to Toby04, and to anyone else who has insights.
I am thinking a Container would be wind-proof and a wind-break. I could possibly park my RV in the lee of the container and exist in the two until I get the permits and money to get a permanent home and septic system.
I am thinking the sand and gravel companies will know about the the process of getting necessary permits for the driveway job I am thinking of.
I am in So. Cal. now in my RV and I want to visit Beryl next month and talk to contractors and officials and, hopefully, neighbors.
Many thanks for any help.
