Hi.

I work and live in Hillsboro, Oregon and received a good offer for a position near the airport. It is too far of a commute from Hillsboro (1 hour) even at 7:00 in the morning. I spent 4 afternoons looking at houses on the east side like Milwaukee, Clackamas and Gresham. problems. I see that there is high crime, nice neighborhood nestled in with dumpy neighborhoods, extremely hilly, and 205 log jams. It is coming down to 2 options; decline the offer or accept it and settle in Vancouver.

Do you see any issues with this plan? Also, my wife works as a office admin asst/manager. Can she find work in Vancouver?

Thanks in advance for any feedback

I think if you're willing to move to Vancouver your commute would be short. I have no idea what your wife would be able to find but there are plenty of companies on this side of the river or near the airport. Ideally she would work in Vancouver to avoid state income tax.

If you are a cyclist there is a bike path across the 205 bridge that a lot of bike commuters use. If you bought a house near the 205 bridge on the Vancouver side you would pretty much have a bike path commute to the airport area and could avoid all the traffic and get your daily workout in to boot.

Your description of the housing you saw on the East side of Multnomah Co. could also be descriptive of Vancouver, but without so much crime. SR 14 has become clogged coming off I205 frequently. 3 years ago, it was an easy drive to 164th St. But no more. I 205 is also crowded, although you can choose to get off at Millplain--also crowded. They are adding a new off ramp onto 19 ST, believe, which might help relieve some of the clog, although the condition if 18th St. is questionable through major stretches.

If you live in East Vancouver, and don't have to fight rush hour, you can get to the airport in 20 minutes. So, I think Van is located well for your new job. But traffic issues continue to get worse from Portland to Van. There is no plan to build a new bridge or to revamp an old one.

Many nicer neighborhoods here are interspersed with less affluent neighborhoods. Some of the area is hilly--mainly west of the E. Van area. I think the area around 192nd Ave between Camas and Van is building up to be a nicer area. You might investigate that area.

We live in Salmon Creek and with really bad traffic on 205 it takes 30 minutes to get to the office east of the airport. But most days it is only 20 minutes.

It won't pencil out. You still get hit with oregon taxes. Might as well look for relocating close to area. Plus you won't be avoiding any I-205 log jam is there's a wreck. It clogs up the area TOTALLY.

Crime is crime frankly, I'd call Hillsboro dumpy myself (Lived in Aloha till 1999) But look around, I think you're over thinking this.
