Last summer, I visited a friend in San Francisco whom I hadn't seen in a while. Normally in such cases, I must gently remind my host that I eat neither meat, nor dairy, nor eggs, but my friend beat me to it: "I recall that you are a vegan," he wrote, "though one that appreciates fine oysters."
I doubt the OP will come back to read this thread, but if someone thinks a news item* is important enough to post, then I think both sides of the issue should be represented.
If you want remove the thread so there will not be a problem.
If readers want to discuss this column, that's fine. My concern was that "opinion" was being presented as "fact" and that only one side of the issue was being offered.
As a practicing vegan, I can't really get behind the logic of eating oysters simply because they are a (in the author's opinion) more sustainable form of animal protein than beef.
Vegans don't eat animals of any sort--we eat plant based foods, period. The author of this article is not vegan. Don't get me wrong, it isn't my place to tell anyone else how to eat. I chose a vegan lifestyle for a number of reasons, for the planet, for my health, and not least of all, for the animals who will not end up on my dinner plate.
What's next? A piece on the joys of harvesting garden slugs?
What a silly "article"....to repeat, the author is not vegan, nor is he vegetarian.
I think the author is snide and not even close to the great writing talents of the man whose writing he [apparently] is trying to emulate. He fails in that to a colossal degree.
Obviously, the author of this piece is welcome to his opinion, but since the very definition of "vegan" means that one doesn't consume animal products, he shouldn't use that label on himself.
But, to each his own, I suppose ..... <*shrug*>
