Hello!
I grew up in Stowe, and currently live in Waterbury with my husband and children. I know that Stowe is touristy, but there is also a wonderful community of people who keep that town running...from the bartenders to the lift attendants, Stowe is filled with very (dare I say...normal) hardworking people as well That being said, since the overhaul of Stowe Mountain Resort, the town is attracting a higher income level, and the 'feel' of Stowe has certainly changed over the years. I am a skier, and I prefer to ski Stowe personally, and it is truly a beautiful place to live. The Mad River Valley has a very different vibe....in my opinion, money is still there, but it might not be a mark of higher social status (hopefully this makes sense). The terrain of Sugarbush is excellent, I especially love skiing Mt. Ellen, and you have Mad River Glen right there too. There is a lot of land for sale in that area as well, and its much cheaper to buy land in the valley than in Stowe or in Waterbury for that matter. Fayston, Waitsfield, and Warren all have beautiful rural lots, most with great views as well. I think the main reason it is cheaper to build in the valley is because of its remote location to employment/ box stores/ I89....but if you have a home business, you are one of the lucky few who might be able to live there! Lastly, there is Waterbury. We moved here because it allowed my husband to commute in to South Burlington, and had a close proximity to many ski resorts...Bolton valley, Mad River, Sugarbush, and Stowe. There is a very tight community here, and a very walkable downtown, that is thriving. I love it here, but if we were able to live in the valley...we would...mostly because the feel of a mountain town is unique and close to my heart. It reminds me of Stowe 20 years ago. I hope this helped!
