I have a Sony that uses Mini DV format. Quality is as good as it gets IMO. You need extra batteries and a charger for sure. I would do a hands on at a local electronics store. Now I would love one of those Canon camcorders that can use the same lenses that also work on Canon dslr's but a little more than I can justify. Have a great time in AK and please post some of the stills for us to enjoy.

Yep, mine was a grand nearly a decade ago. I like the option I bought were you can set it down on a table by you and point it at the tv and watch what you shot. The video quality is as good as anything on the evening news.
