I am a 23 yr old female looking to relocate to Newport News or Virginia beach while taking a year off school. I currently live in San Antonio, Texas and I am so sick of it here. The city is dirty and there is nothing to do! I can't stand to be here much longer. My boyfriend lives in Newport news and I have been up there to visit him a few times and loved it. We are no longer together but I liked the area so much I want to move there, but I have heard alot of negative things about the area. Can someone please tell me what to expect, I love the outdoors and all the pretty scenery in the newport/Yorktown area but I am worried about the crime and me being a single female all alone. Any advise would help!

I would first advise choosing between the Peninsula (Newport News, Hampton, York and James City Counties, Williamsburg, etc.) or Virginia Beach. If you plan to spend most of your time in Newport News I would not advise living in Va Beach and having to constantly contend with the incomprehensible Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel traffic.

It sounds as if you are partial to Newport News/York County. I wouldn't worry too much about crime. When you hear negative things about Newport News it is really about "The Bottom" or those areas pretty much to the south of I-664. The area has a few inner city cores in NN, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. These are older downtown areas and there is probably a limit to how much they can be improved. But Newport News north of Mercury Blvd. ranges from fairly decent to quite nice. The area around Christopher Newport University is really taking on a college-town kind of atmosphere which was decidedly lacking in Newport News (not that every town should have a college but it certainly increases the number of things to do for the young crowd). If you can afford it Williamsburg has really developed nicely over the past decade or so. But it terms of affordability I think York County would be your best bet; however I would definitely line up a job before moving!

I don't plan on moving until next summer. I have no intentions of moving without the security of having a job first so I am already starting to look and send out my resume. I assume all the negative comments I have read and heard about the area goes along with any metro area. San Antonio has it's nice places but right down the street it may turn into the ghetto haha. I just love that the beach is right there and all the pine trees in Newport News as well. I hope I don't have a fantasized view of Newport news

It is a lot of crime ..!! beautiful but the place where someone in a ministry for homeless people said that there were so many roaming the streets that are actually released from Eastern State Hospital by the busloads that are dropped off downtown, to go fend for themselves Other than that a beautiful place Middle ways going West , steer clear of East and the Bottom.. Mucho Predators ...
