I keep hearing VA is southern except for NOVA and Maryland is northern except for the Eastern Shore sounds like a bunch of denial to me. Southern/mid atantic is as far as i will go with labeling them.

If it wasn't for DC, all of Virginia would be considered very southern.

Virginia has a southern accent, politically it is very conservative, its climate is more southern than Maryland's....the industries of its major cities are far different than Maryland's. Culturally it is laid back and slow-moving compared to maryland. Virginia also seceded from the Union. Maryland did not.

DC and Maryland, and West Virginia north of Highway 50 roughly, are not part of the south. Wheeling, West Virginia is not southern in any way, shape, or form.

I grew up in Maryland and there is a sign at the border between MD and PA that says, "Mason-Dixon Line." That line denoted what states were north/Union and what were south/Confederate during the Civil War, and since I would imagine the very term "northern" or "southern" state was in reference to the Civil War--- that would have to be it, wouldn't it? Anything south of the Mason-Dixon Line (Maryland and down) would be southern, which includes Virgina. See the map at link below.

I am 30 years old and was born in Maryland, lived in the DC area my entire life. Don't tell me what southern is and not, transplants washing away southern culture doesn't change what this region is.

Maryland ain't southern.

It wasn't southern in the war for states rights. It wasn't even represented on the battle flag.

Even the native people of Maryland are not very southern. It's not just transplants.

Maryland was a central colony, and is now a northern state. The Mason Dixon is tired, misunderstood, and not a proper north/south border.

I'll tell you whatever I want. Transplants? That's a good one. The only possible transplants Maryland could have had were from neighboring states less than 50 miles away...those are hardly what I'd call transplants. There is no southern dialect in maryland, the state is not politically or culturally southern, etc. Maryland is not like Florida. My uncle has lived in Maryland since the late 1960's, so I think it's safe to say he knows more of what he's talking about than you. If you are only 30 years old, DC and Maryland shouldn't seem that southern at all to you unless you live in the far southern parts.
