Which city would you consider more urban between two of the most dense cities in Virginia? I have noticed that some people refer to the city of Richmond as being more urban and dense than Norfolk, although Norfolk is listed as having a higher density. Richmond has more rowhomes in the city, while Norfolk has better urban transit options such as light rail. Both cities have older district areas (Richmond: The Fan, Monument Avenue, Church Hill. Norfolk: Ghent, Park Place, Free Mason District, Huntersville).

Nobody? I thought this thread would potentially turn into an interesting debate.

Do you want a debate or opinions based on what you asked? I personally prefer Richmond over Norfolk. Richmond has the history while Norfolk puts you closer to the beach. Which to me just means more traffic and congestion. i believe there is more of a rush hour with Norfolk. Both areas have their benefits but to me Richmond comes out on top.

Having lived in both I would say Norfolk is the city. Besides transit options they have a primary buisness district where corporate as well as small buisnesses are located.

That doesn't make any sense. Richmond clearly has a central business district that is home to major corporations, small businesses, the state seat of government, the Federal Reserve, etc.

As far as city proper and infrastructure Richmond hands down it has the neighborhoods of a bigger city, but Norfolk seems to be more progressive and a little more cosmopolitan.

I don't see it in Richmond and most people seem to leave for the burbs at 5:00. Plus they lose points for what comes across as a disfunctional goverment.

You'll note the people who run the companies go home to the city, not the burbs... the most expensive real estate in Richmond is in the city. Drive out from the Fan by Windsor Farms to River Road if you want to check it out... all inside the city.

Its pretty clear cut to anyone who's lived in both. Richmond is smaller than Norfolk, but much more urban and cosmopolitan. It's not even close. The interesting question is why - my brother lives in Ghent in Norfolk, and I live in the city of Richmond, and he and I have spent a lot of time discussing it (we both find socio-demographic analysis quite interesting). Main operative theory is the skewing effects of the military now, though we'd be open to others.

I'd guess that the suburbs of Norfolk would be pretty similar to those of Richmond. Since neither is my taste, I'm in no position to make that comparison.

Wow, I never knew that Norfolk was bigger in both population and land. Fact is that since Richmond is the only true city (sorry Petersburg) in the metro, everything is that is centralized is there. Norfolk is part of Hampton Roads which has many hubs thus watering down Norfolk (and VB's) urban scene. Both cities are the most urban outside of Northern Virginia though.
