West Virginia

I really like Virginia, both of my parents are originally from VA and in my current plans to relocate I have researched the I-81 corridor of VA. I was seriously considering a property in Dungannon Va, a very south-west area of rural VA about six hours from where I am now. But, it looks like even in the rural counties of VA there has been a push to implement restrictive zoning rules. So, I'll have to stick with WV where in most counties we are still free to raise animals for food, build barns, run a bussiness or build homes for in-laws on our property without government interference.

Anybody in the really rural, mountain areas of VA know if this is accurate? Zoning laws do have a purpose, but I also am looking to escape from the heavy-handed zoning which doesn't allow for the type of thing above poster is referring to..

I would live in Wythe county. It's smack in the middle of the Appalachians and has great fishing, hiking, and friendly people. It's also 30 minutes or so from Mt. Rogers and close enough for day trips into the Carolina mountains. Plus it's a rural area with two interstate for easy access to other places.
