And since when did the state legislature start punishing entire counties through legislation for the actions of a few? Every state legislature has suspect politicians. I'm not excusing what the previous administration did, but its a bit immoral, unethical, and unjust to hold someone's criminal activity against an entire people. If that was the case all counties should receive the same treatment. What I see are a bunch of greedy politicians balking at such a great score for the state that just happened to come out of little ole PGC.

Do you remember what the Legislature did to the School Board when Metts was in charge? While all Counties may have issues the fact that PG does get tons of State money (along with Montgomery) impacts the treatment.

If Leopold holds on too long in Anne Arundel expect sanctions there, too. When AA schools had the sex scandals a number of years ago heads rolled immediately, they didn't wait to "see what happens", that's part of the difference. The Superintendent, a life time Arundel teacher and resident who came up through the ranks, immediately resigned along with sevearl of his Deputies.

Turns out that the elected School Board was correct and Metts was screwing up royally, especially in the area of grants (using targeted grants for non-targeted things).

One little known facet of the legislation abolishing the PG Board gave power to the Legislature and Governor to abolish any elected or appointed Town Council, Planning or any other local (town or county) board in the State.

But how does that apply to this situation? Those who broke the law are in jail. There's a new administration. And this is a private business deal between two private entities that will benefit the county as well as the state. Why the hate? From stuff that happened years ago by people who essentially aren't around anymore. And just how long should PGC suffer for crooks who are currently being punished in jail and/or fined and out of government, etc.?

You'd have to ask them yourself but I can tell you some of the thinking:

an ongoing culture of corruption which didn't end with Johnson but permeates the County government to include the school system

a school system that is stuck at being number 2 (from the bottom)

a police department that continues to attract Department of Justice attention

I should point out that these issues were the same, and the attitudes of the State government, were the same when the County power structure and population was majority white.

No real surprise but it passed with the minimum allowable votes in the house. Article below provides an overview.
