Very interesting article. It would be interesting to see the impact on prince george's county given the number of federal employee. Not to mention the impact on the private sector (contractors etc. ) Thoughts??

Maryland to lose 114,795 jobs with federal cuts, report says - Baltimore Business Journal

Forget MD, with VA and DC also losing a lot of jobs, this whole region is about to take a big hit. This has some wide ranging implications.

Thank God I didn't jump into the government yet. So much for the D.C area being immune to the recession.

Well, I'm not sure what you do, but there is going to be a lot of private sector jobs affected too. The private sector is largely dependent on government funding in this region.

I agree its going to hit the entire region but spoke to MD since this is the MD forum and PG because I live in that county and also because it was hit hard (especially in the housing market) during the recession. Hopefully the majority of the jobs they are speaking of are through retirement and attrition.

I was actually going to say the same.

Systems engineer for Terramark (a verizon company). Global cloud computing. The government is actually moving to the cloud ( a small fraction of our customer base) . So, we have more business than we can handle at the moment. I think most of the cuts will be in defense though right? Which is probably why VA will be hardest hit.

Yes, mostly defense companies. I don't think places like the NIH would suffer from this and if any, it would be very minimal.

Yeah it will probably hit defense and the intelligence community the most and then those eligible for retirement would follow. They project the impact on the federal side will be about 760K and close to 500K on the contractor side. The problem that I see is that the increase in people either unemployed or retired will take a toll on consumer spending in the area. The fewer people buy the higher prices may go to cover cost etc. More sensitive areas may see a boom-a-rang on the housing implosion as well as an impact on community services and the like. There have been whispers of a second recession and this will definitely take us further down that road. Not to get on the doom and gloom bandwagon but this will be interesting to watch.

Yeah the did see a slight bump in their 2013 budget but that may change after 1/2/13 and with their 2014 budget. Long-term investment in research has never been a favorite when it has come to the budget. I do predict that more agencies will be placing a hiring freeze to help "stop the bleeding". I know my dept has closed down a lot of offices as well as initiated hiring freezes (at least for external candidates) and reorganizations in various bureaus.
