I live in Maryland right next to the Lake Forest Mall in Gaithersburg but go into Virginia quite often and shop at the Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax. Why this is a completely unscientific observation, in my OPINION the people in the two towns, Gaithersburg and Fairfax, should be pretty similar but they are not. The folks in the nearly identical malls really are completely different. The people at Fair Oaks look a lot better, seem more well manned, are better dressed and well groomed. The people at Lake Forest Mall in general look more ghetto and are rough looking and acting. Now of course you will find exceptions, but I wonder if anyone else agrees. Your thoughts?

Not sure why you think the people of Fairfax and Gaithersburg should be similar:

Gaithersburg:
White: 34.7%
Black: 19.5%
Asian: 13.9%
Hispanic (of any race): 24.8%
Median Income: $82,525

Fairfax City:
White: 69.6%
Black: 4.7%
Asian: 15.2%
Hispanic (of any race): 15.8%
Median Income: $94,659

These are, demographically, pretty different places.

^^^ That's all that needs to be said.

BTW, it's spelled LAKEFOREST MALL. As a person who used to live minutes away from Lakeforest, there's no similarities between that general area, its demographics, and the Fair Oaks area.

I used to live in Montgomery Village right by the mall in the late 1980's and it was a decent mall back then. I've heard the whole area has gone downhill slightly since then. The area around Fair Oaks mall has always been a much better place, in my opinion. So, your perception is right on the mark.

Maryland is northern and Virginia is southern..... that's why you see the type of differences you see.

Virginia is a better place to live than Maryland. Northern Virginia is a much better place to live than Montgomery county. Better schools, more affluent neighborhoods, better home value appreciation, and much more growth.

Maybe that's why the demos are different?

I agree that Northen Virginia is a lot nicer overall than the Maryland side of the D.C. suburbs. In my opion, the Baltimore suburbs are nicer as well.

And the deep rooted southern ignorance that continues to be the pitfalls of attempts to sabotage all forms of Business and Economic Growth for Maryland in favor of trying to Hype Virginia into imaginary perfect business friendly/economic wealthy state...

But thanks goodness there a lot of Intelligent non-deep rooted southerners that have the common sense that God gave them to accept the FACT that Maryland is a Southern State.......
