Well, after 6 years, the UTC Safeway, which was to be the anchor to kick start the success of UTC, will finally be built either this year or next. What's missing though are the condos that were proposed on top. I'm a little salty about that, but I'll live. They could at least build offices or apartments on top. Such a waste of prime space. I have provided eye-candy below. The new architecture is very urban in style and will have retail portions facing America BLVD. There looks to be a plaza on top. In one of the drawings it had a person looking out towards 410 from the top floor. I'm not sure if there will be tables and chairs, etc. More drawings are in the PDF link below. It even contains the layout of the store if interested.

The company, based in Pleasanton, Calif., is moving aggressively to keep its footing. At the moment, Safeway is building two new local stores, both with hundreds of apartments on top, and is planning to build or rebuild four stores beginning this year or the next in Alexandria, Rockville, Upper Marlboro and Hyattsville.
Looking from East-West Highway (410).

I just want to say I have never seen that much glass on a grocery store at street level. I wonder what the hours will be.

According to the flyer, the other retail portions will contain two floors. That's interesting. I wonder how businesses will utilize two floors unless the top floor will be storage? Mini-mall?

Nice Area Overview.

The center doorway may lead to the upstairs retail.

It actually resembles the store/complex that they built in DC off 5th Street (near busboys and poets). Very nice though. Its good to see they are stepping up their game.

Default Perspective Views

Here are some perspective views of the Safeway. Looks like the planning board will approve the amendments. Which means no apartments or offices on top.

Default Fancy 3-D Video of New Safeway

I wish all renderings had a 3-D video. As cheesy as this one is, it does add perspective. The Safeway does kind of look out of place next to taller buildings. Oh well.

PS. Hold the phone! Found a new website with 3-D videos of projects!
