I just thought it was interesting that 3 local specialty proprietors who either started in Georgetown or have one of their stores in Georgetown have chosen the Rt. 1 corridor to do business.

1. Sweetgreen started in Georgetown

2. Terrapin Turf Bar & Grill with live jazz/blues is opening this summer who's owner operated a similar concept in Georgetown before moving to College Park.

3. Pizzeria Paradiso has 1 of 3 locations in Georgetown and is in talks of opening up a store in the Arts District in Hyattsville.

Now all we need is a Clyde's and a Dean & Deluca.

I doubt that Route 1 could ever compete with tony Georgetown, and all its high rollers. However the area is probably becoming competitive with the more youthful areas of DC and Arlington, which the businesses you mentioned cater to. Last week the WaPost had a story on echo boomers, those aged 25 to 34, and how much of the growth in DC (50 percent) and Arlington (42 percent) over the past two years has been fueled by these kids -- Echo Boomers head to Washington - The Washington Post and ?Echo boomers? flock to the District, Arlington - Washington Post. (I say "kids" because I'm over the hill)

What the story didn't mention, and few people seem to have picked up on, is that #3 in the region for echo boomer growth in the 2010-2012 timeframe is Anne Arundel County (with 33 percent of all growth comprised of echo boomers) and Prince George's County (30 percent). PG county beat out Alexandria (!!) which saw 23 percent of its total growth taken up by echo boomers and MoCo, which saw 21 percent. If the numbers can be believed, only 15 percent of Fairfax County's growth can be attributed to echo boomers moving in.

The overall numbers of echo boomers in PG County are probably much lower than in DC and Arlington, but a trend seems to be developing.

Talk to some of the Hyattsville Town Council members who actually have their heads screwed on straight and get what their take on it is. I did earlier this week.

Not close. Think of where Georgetown is and who goes there. It isn't what it was 30 - 40 years ago but it still has plenty of clout. I used to hang out up there when I played in bands and it was the place to be. People pay premium prices for their houses in that area, just like in old town Alexandria, that don't exist along Rt 1.

Disclaimer: This was meant to be a light-hearted post highlighting three businesses on Rt. 1 with connections to Georgetown. Seriously I don't think that RT. 1 is becoming anything like Georgetown. I wouldn't even want it to.

Not funny. I'm reporting you to the board moderator. You've broken a serious rule by posting something light hearted about Prince George's. You cannot post about PG unless the topic debates or bashes the school system, 95% of the neighborhoods where you will be knifed en route to your mailbox because they are all unsafe, or its 700,000 residents who are all broke, crazy or criminals is not allowed!!! This will be your only warning.

You forgot griping about the "failures" of the African American community, that's usually a really popular one on this board.
