Yeah, but those blacks are being replaced by Hispanics, Asians and other Blacks from the Caribbean and Africa.

Moderator cut: personal Mason Dixon Line divided Maryland and Pennsylvania. Maryland had slaves and Pennsylvania was free as well as Delaware. Learn your history. DC also had slaves.

All of you want DC to seem like its not geographically southern because of the gentrification going on and the vibrancy. DC geographically is a southern city. The north starts geographically on the east coast when you get to Pennsylvania and Delaware. Its always been like that. The Mason Dixon Line wasn't put there for no reason. It was the dividing line between the north and south. Not Virginia, or DC as you all claim. Maryland Pennsylvania and Delaware state line divides the two. Stop stating false information. Just because its the Nations Capitol and well known does not mean its not a southern city.

^ technically, you're right. the snowband really determines where the real north is.
dc doesn't even get as much snow as philly and points farther north. i'm tired of
arguing about this tho, because I've been knowing this forever so it is nothing new
to me. it's just that the yankees took over dc and md way back in the civil war while
virginia on down seceeded from the union. maryland basically got annexed by the
north because they had no choice. that's why dc and md are considered the north
now, because they're north of the potomac river. i guess next people will be saying
nova is the north too, because it is north of the rappahanock river lol but whatever.

DC is considered northern by deep southerners and a handful of transplants. Then you have transplants that don't consider it northern (I was in the camp) along with locals who prefer "Mid Atlantic," which means neither northern or southern or possibly "both." It's easy to see how the city can easily trapped between the two regions.

A southerner may ask...

Where are the Waffle Houses?
Where are the Sonics?
Where are the southern accents?
Why is everyone so mean here?

And then conclude that DC is anything but the South. A northerner may ask...

Where are the millions of Italians?
Where are the bodegas?
Where's my sensational tabloid newspaper with crass headlines?
Where's the "attytood?"

And then conclude that DC is anything but the North.

True. On top of that the Republican Party is shrinking. Many whites from Europe vote democratic as well plus a large percentage of white females and white gays.

The importance of the American black vote to most blue states is overblown. All the blacks could leave some states and they would still be blue states.

If a Native from New York heard a DC native talk they would think there southern. Most black DC natives are originally from North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi. Many can notice the southern twang in DC accents. If someone from the Deep south like Tennessee heard a DC native talk they would probably think its more neutral or had a slight northern twang.

The city is not defined strictly by its black natives.

The city historically was a predominately black city. Therefore most of DC natives are of African American decent. Not including the transplants
