Where did HSM move their manufacturing to? Was that recent? I just looked at some HSM stuff at Bloomingdales and it was all Made in USA.

The thing I like about suits is that, if tailored properly, they can be insanely body-flattering for both men and women. I like to look nice, and I think I end up looking much better when I'm wearing a suit than when I'm not.

I thought I read that somewhere. I would love to be wrong about that.

For national chains selling women's workwear, you might want to start shopping before you move here. Anything resembling a suit will usually sell the instant it hits the clearance rack, and definitely before the second markdown.

Ann Taylor is the ubiquitous uniform for work-appropriate clothing. (The Post called her "the patron saint of fashion in Washington, D.C.") Talbots, J. Crew, and Banana are all roughly equivalent. All of them are running mid-summer sales, and all have outlets nearby.

Ross Dress For Less, Marshall's/TJ Maxx, and Nordstrom Rack are all about as good as going to outlets -- but you have to shop smart. New merchandise arrives all the time, and it gets picked over soon; weekdays are often better than weekends. Sometimes you'll score better stuff at out-of-the-way locations, but big-name brand merchandise often gets limited to higher-traffic, wealthier locations.

Take an opposite approach with "fast fashion" chains like H&M, Zara, and Uniqlo, which carry more professional clothes in their bigger East Coast shops, and more casual lines in smaller cities.
