If you are going to live in Adams Morgan, you're going to need to learn to do more than 5 blocks at a stretch--easy. Walking is going to come to you pretty quickly and if it doesn't then I'd really suggest looking for a place within 1 block of a metro or so (how far is your office from the metro?) Biking for every little thing or to get out at night is going to border on the difficult to dangerous (I lived in DC for many years with no car and a bike--I learned to hoof it).
I'd also recommend a decent collection of shoes if you are going to have a 'desk job'. When I first started in DC (in a suit everyday job) I had a 'rain pair' of shoes that were very comfortable and looked 'good enough' to walk around outside, then a standard pair for day to day in the office, and then a dress pair for really big events. As I got older, I ended up with 2 pairs of each, alternating them each day (giving them a chance to breathe). Add to that sneakers and walking shoes and other things. Got to be pretty crazy.
