My husband and I are looking for a townhouse to rent. We are not familiar with the DC metro area. We saw a townhouse for $2000 in the NE area by Gallaudet University for $2000 plus utilities. Is this a nice, safe area. This is from the Craigslist posting:
Close to the New York Avenue Metro, the rapidly developing H Street corridor, Union Station, 395 & the BW Parkway, Gallaudet University, Georgetown Law, downtown, and Capital Hill
Getting an understanding of an urban neighborhood can be difficult. Though there isn't crime data attached, Maps-live.com has 'birds-eye' views of allowing you to get a perspective on the type of neighborhood/urbanism a rental might be in. This was helpful when I used craigslist or couldn't be there live to sift through places.
The area is probably getting gentrified, etc, etc., and I'm happy that the lives of the residents there are improving. But, my feeling is if I could not jog through the area and I most certainly would not here, than I would not want to live here.
If you are looking for that general area of the whole Washington area, why not try Silver Spring, Md., just a few miles north?
This could be one of the better places to buy if you're in it for a 10 or more year investment. If you're just renting than it seems logical to pick a neighborhood that is already fully developed.
is it the safest area? no.
is it safe enough? yeah.
i dont have enough experience to give a great answer, but when i go to union station, the neighborbood seems nice. reading about crime, there is some, but not as bad as people make it sound. a lot of college students.
Where is this place specifically? NE is a big place.
