Mika Brzezinski joins the list of famous victims such as Donna Shalala of Washington DC's perpetual crime wave:

Washington Times - MSNBC host Brzezinski mugged in D.C.

Meh, more of an accosting than a traditional mugging.

But no, no street corner in the entire city is perpetually safe from vagrants, scoundrels and all around ne'er do wells.

This sounds more like a panhandler than a mugging.

I said no street corner is perpetually safe.

Meaning it's a big city and you can't constantly defend against muggings or "aggressive panhandling" on every single inch of sidewalk across town.

And once in a blue moon something is going to happen even outside a nice hotel to a broadcaster.

So it's not a perpetual crime wave, unless by that you mean different crimes are happening all the time and we always have a higher than average crime rate.

That said, the city has thousands of kids dropping out of school each year. These people don't move on to become tax attorneys, civil engineers, or even rodeo clowns.

A lot of them become vagrants and petty criminals, same as every other big American city. They're going to mug people. But as muggings go, Mika can be thankful that it was pretty mild.

While some other US cities have enjoyed a renaissance of sorts since the 1990's, DC remains stubbornly mired in a morass of seemingly intractable problems, including out of control crime and an atrocious public school system. DC mayor Adrian Fenty wound up with egg on his face on "Morning Joe" when, instead of discussing the inauguration and his putatative efforts to improve the school system, he was forced to once again address DC's crime rate due to host Mika's mugging that very morning.

It'd be tough to find a street corner in any major city that is completely, totally, and perpetually safe. Not to mention that visitors/tourists are always appealing and "easy" targets.

Honestly, if I was in front of a major hotel and some guy came up and said "Give me money and nothing will happen" I'd tell him to go f' himself.

This MSNBC guy sounds like a wimp.

"We need to bring back lynching to get rid of all the vermin in DC."

Yes, but what do we do to get rid of all the ***holes?

A perpetual crime wave? the above post?

Over react much, Lulu?

If you read stats rather than anecdotes, you'll find that DC's crime rate has actually plummeted since the 90s. Granted, a lot has been due to gentrification and crime has simply moved to the Maryland suburbs, but it still negates you claim.

DC has, actually, enjoyed a massive renaissance since the 1990s - perhaps amongst the most noticeable of any major city. Dupont, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Mt. Pleasant, Chinatown, Penn Quarter, Capitol Hill, downtown, large sections of Northeast. Cranes have been a pretty steady presence in the DC "sky" line for some time.

I actually find it hard to think of an area that hasn't drastically improved. Even the schools are starting to turn around. Even Anacostia's turned a bit of a corner.

The city has problems, but get a grip. Be a part of the solution.
