My vote is for Silver Spring. MD is the place to be if you're going to live in DC. Only live in VA if you absolutely must have access to Vietnamese food.

There are plenty of lovely areas to live in NoVa, including many that are much nicer than Silver Spring. Nothing wrong with Silver Spring mind you, but the above comment is just nonsense.

I'm just not a NoVA kind of cat.
The traffic there is awful and the highway system baffling. MD is closer to the nicest places of the district. Except for Georgetown, VA is near charmless places like SW DC that look like an eastern bloc country.

Except that by living near the Braddock Road station in Alexandria, the OP wouldn't be dealing with awful traffic or a baffling highway system at all. It's not like anyone was suggesting that the OP move to Centreville. Also...what is baffling about the highways in NoVA, aside from the HOV restrictions?
Silver Spring has a lot of things going for it, but compared to Old Town Alexandria, its charms are somewhat lacking.

The problem with Silver Spring for me, the OP, is that it is farther away from work and on the wrong metro line. Being on the blue or orange allows me to go directly to my workplace with no transfers.
NoVA is better on 2nd amendment rights than MD, so there is one positive, I'll agree.
