Got word today that my spouse might be stationed in FT Lewis starting in January, with a deployment to Afghanistan to follow. We have been at FT Hood a few years and expected a few more therefore we just bought a home. We are trying to decide if I should relocate also. I was just laid off due to corporate downsizing. I'm in the corporate HR/Recruiting field in the telecommunications industry. I know that FT Lewis is a lot more expensive...is it worth the move? Will we find something in commutable distance to both post, and to Seattle/Tacoma for my corporate setting? Any advice on the housing market/apartment rentals, employment, and areas worth looking into would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Default Ft Hood Area Info/Ft Lewis Info

Hey there. I have joined this fiorum to find out about the Ft Hood area. My husband has orders for Feb. I have heard so many things about the area good and bad. Thank you for your time. Also, I have a friend that is at Ft Lewis and they just got there in August. I could try and get some info about the area there.

If your spouse is going to be deployed for a year, you may as well stay in the Fort hood area, where you have social connections. Wait until your spouse returns from Afghanistan to decide on moving out here.

I would look into living in the South Hill area (Puyallup). Close to major freeways, Tacoma is about 15 minutes away..Seattle is about 40-45 minutes away. Housing prices are decent for the area.

Is it worth it? Depends on what your priorities are. Can you stand gray skies for 8 months of the year? Do you like 4 distinct seasons?
