Coming from the midwest myself and being a black girl here in the Tacoma I can tell you to rest easy that you're coming to a great city. My sister just moved to Chicago from here and she's ready to come back because we are really blessed to be in an area where everyone is pretty much nice and welcoming. Of course there are some idiots but that's more rare than common around here. Because of the military bases out here we see so many different people so Western Washington (along the I-5 corridor at least) everyone is pretty much use to interracial dating here and realize that wherever there is a military base there will be black folks so the they're pretty much over it . Welcome to the 253

Tacoma is one of the most multi racial cities in the country. Not sure if you knew that. But I would not worry. Coming from Chicago you will have a better life in Tacoma.

Tacoma and Tumwater are two very different places. Tacoma is a larger busier city where as Tumwater is a quiet suburb of Olympia. Tumwater is the place you come home to every night after working a long stressful day in Olympia or Tacoma. Either way, as a manager of property in the Tumwater area I don't think you need to worry about feeling out of place at all. Skin color doesn't really matter to folks in the area.

One factor is how race is now reported, with multiple races selectable, rather than one "mixed-race" option.

Outside of rural backwaters, you shouldn't have any problems. There aren't strict color-lines here - there are many "diverse" majority-minority neighborhoods here (most with significant Asian populations), but very few majority-black neighborhoods (none in Seattle). Even in lily-white neighborhoods, you shouldn't experience any hostility or lack of acceptance.

Some people moving here do equate a "safe" neighborhood with one with no blacks or Hispanics in it, but end up paying for the privilege, IF they can afford it. In general, affluence/poverty rather than race determine the safety of a neighborhood or area. By and large, skyrocketing housing costs and gentrification are driving the poor and lower-income workers south from Seattle/Bellevue.

As to Tacoma, I'd be more concerned with the Tacoma-Tumwater commute on I-5. Lacey or Olympia would be much easier.
