I'm excited to be returning to Western Washington soon. I work from home (mostly) so can choose almost anyplace to settle from Olympia to Bellingham. I can even go to Kitsap or Jefferson County if I want to. Concerning Bellingham, I've been there a couple times and I like it, and I like being near to all the great parks and cities. But I'm wondering, is it mainly a college town? Is there a better place for a single middle aged guy who wants a moderate bit of a social life? (I think I'd prefer avoiding Seattle itself right now. It's just a little to densely packed for me this time around). I'd appreciate your thoughts.

It's not strictly a college town like Cheney and Ellensburg. It's much bigger and has an actual economy of it's own with the university only being the 2nd largest employer. You may also like the proximity to the border for trips across to Vancouver.

No, It's not strictly a college town, though WWU does play a big influence on it.

I'd say Bellingham has it's own unique vibe that's hard to describe, but mostly separate from the university.

I think the best way to describe Bham is this video:

Anyway, hope that helps.
