Hey everyone,

I did some searching through the forum for posts on DuPont and was hoping folks could put their 2cents in on this posting. What can be said about DuPont? I'd like to hear more than just the attractions of the area, but the harsh realities as well.

From what I've gathered....

The Good

* Close proximity to JBLM with short commute times
* Close-knit military community
* Mostly modern homes with nearby parks, golf course
* Safe
* Small town feel with a few coffee shops, restaurants, gym, library nearby

The Bad

* Car dependent area with enough amenities and chain stores nearby in Lacey, but not within walking distance?
* Noise (from JBLM)

Any more pros and cons? I'm thinking noise might be a concern depending on where the firing ranges are on JBLM, as well as the airfield. Also, if their is a high military turnover, lots of new neighbors can be good and bad?

Feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hello I've lived in Dupont for 16 years. Before I start on the cons I will say it's a great place to live without restarting the pros you listed Dupont is a small sized city that is growing slowly but steadily. We have great parks, trails, and an okay assortment of restaurants. If you have older kids they may become bored with the lack of any type of recreation Center, movie theater or any kind of attractions teenagers would like to o have. The next major problem with Dupont is the fact they have had more trouble (mainly there own fault) then any city I've ever known of in having a grocery store or stores you can actually buy stuff at other then fast food and restaurant food. It is becoming very irritating when you live in a city for 16 year and they continually "beat the dead horse" on gettitg a grocery store every year and still no store. BESIDES that great community all housing is new. Paved sidewalks, great police and fire department. Definitely keep it in your list as a possibility that feel free to ask questions you might have

Aleksandr2013,

Thank you for the reply! My wife and I are taking a mini-vacation to Seattle in the upcoming weeks and we definitely plan to drive through Tacoma and swing through DuPont to see the area for ourselves.

Yes - it used to be a Dupont company town. The Dupont company had a munitions plant there. They built the town around 1910 or so. The town incorporated as a separate entity in the early 1950s (no longer owned by the company) and the munitions plant closed in the mid 1970s.

The DoD is apparently planning on reducing the number of troops stationed at JBLM by a third, from around 45,000 to around 30,000, as we start drawing down from our war footing. Real estate could get cheap in the area. You might think about renting for a year or two to see what happens.
