We have to have Mandatory under Insurance included in our Insurance policy here in the Islands, State law.

Just renewed our insurance, big jump this year also, about 18-20%. We went over it in depth with our agent. The biggest reason for the jump, and I can see this, is that modern cars are way expensive to fix. My previous car, a 2016 GTI, had robotic headlights that followed road curves, sensors in the front for distance keeping (whatever it was, I never used it) and rear parking sensors, all very easily damaged in a low-speed hit. A headlight on that car alone is $1200. And you see this style of car everywhere, fancy DRL LED headlights and over-styled plastic bumpers bristling with sensors.

We have 3 cars, full coverage with extended limits, we pay about $120/mo. Not too bad, My wife's car is cheapest because it's cheap to replace, but my 2007 truck and my new Q60 cost about the same to insure. The insurance cost of the truck is mostly in liability. The Q60 is mostly in comprehensive/uninsured. The truck can cause a lot of damage to newer vehicles, and the Q60 is expensive to fix.

Used to live in AZ, they would require proof of insurance to maintain driving privileges, and insurance companies do report to the DOL when insurance expires.

I will say, car insurance in WA doesn't seem bad at all to us. I do agree about the rants about the uninsured drivers and the politics about that. It's terrible. But, in AZ, we had "better" rules for sure, but we were overrun by illegals and our costs were still high. At one point Joe Arpaio made a significant dent in the social issues in Maricopa County, but now he's demonized....

made in china - who do you insure your cars with? That's a really low amount to pay monthly for 3 cars!

According to some experts, there comes a point when it's no longer smart to carry C and C. My '09 Volvo($110k miles)reached that point last year.

That's what they say, but see what happens if you go without it! Insurance companies do still cover it, they pay out when there's an accident, so I don't understand this whole theory, that it's better not to pay for it after a certain point.

Anyone have Liberty Insurance? They're really hitting us up with advertising, I'm just curious about real life examples. Do they come to your aid and help you if you have a car accident? Fully-completely cover you and your assets?

Finally, how about cost? Are they more expensive for similar coverage than, let's say, State Farm Auto Insurance?

A few years ago, my wife's car took $9300 to repair, fortunately paid for by the other driver's insurance. But what if it was only worth $8000, at the time, and we instead had to pay for the repairs?
My point is, you have consider if your car's value is still worth carrying the C and C. And we always carry at least what's required by state law.

I pay for comprehensive on cars I would have to replace, but don't have the cash to replace out of pocket.

This has often been most important when I was most poor... because I could afford the cost to insure my old used car, but I could not afford to replace it. That is perhaps when insurance is most needed.
