I wonder if we are slowly, inexorably moving towards a state income tax. Initiative 1098, pushed by Bill Gates Sr., went down 64-36 in 2010. But that was 8 years ago, and the state has been moving more blue since then. The whole East Side is now blue, whereas there used to be quite a few red state legislators. Even conservative Dem Rodney Tom was drubbed 65-35 in the 48th LD in 2018.

Olympia seems to have an insatiable appetite for spending, and at some point they will have to look for new revenue. The state might be close to being blue enough to get it through.

That's on one hand. On the other, initiative 1631 (energy tax) went down 56-43, and Lisa Brown(D-Spokane), long-time state senator and income tax champion, lost her race for US Congress 54-45 despite polling well right up until Nov 6.

I think any income tax would be an extremely tough sell. It is easy to argue against, since the sales tax is already one of the highest in the country. As I have posted before, if we cut the sales tax in half and added a moderate income tax, I would be OK with that. But this isn't "either/or" in some legislative minds, and that will eventually doom it. (Hopefully).

Bottom line, WA has a strong economy for many reasons, and one of those is the lack of State income tax. Why wreck that?
