I mean that folks in Sydney are a bit lucky (if they can't take the heat) that they often have days in the summer when the highs are only in the 70's. You know the deal in south Texas, there are not many days when the high is in the 70's (unless it's rainning) in the long hot summer. This was not to say all people in Texas mind the heat...only that Sydney is a rather cool climate compared to most of the south Texas and Texas Gulf Coast much of the year.
Seattle, on the other hand, had 300 days in a row recently without one single day 80 degrees and warmer.
And it literally had only 5 days that got 75 degrees and above for those past 300 days since Early September 2010.
Probably pretty few days 70+ too such as only 15 days.
Tomorrow's forecast high temperature in Seattle is 61 degrees with clouds, rain, and wind and a low temperature of 51 degrees
Sydney's summers are as long as south Texas, particularly in the western (inland) suburbs. We usually pass 90F in September, and from then on it only gets worse as humidity levels rise. It's not so much the severity of the heat as the persistence- it's shorts and t-shirts for around 75% of the year and we don't get a winter.
We can get extended spells of severe heat though. Last summer's heatwave was a real doozy: 104F (40C) for a week in the western suburbs (Penrith) with dewpoints in excess of 70F. As a commentator on another forum put it- "it was like south Florida on 'roids".
Have a look at the stats for Penrith here (Feb 2011): Penrith, NSW - February 2011 - Daily Weather Observations (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/201102/html/IDCJDW2111.201102.shtml - broken link). Jan 31 had a max of 41.5 also.
How silly! If you really think that Sydney is similar to South Texas, why don't you look at Laredo's monthly averages and see for yourself. New York City gets heat waves with weeks of temps over 100+ and yet no one would dare to claim that NYC is comparable to South Texas during summer. In fact, NYC gets hotter summers than Sydney. LOL 104F for a week is nothing. We've been getting 110 for the past 150 days here in North Texas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laredo,_Texas#Climate
Well, here it is...It wont be for 1 day...I think its going to be an ongoing hot air for next week.
Last pic is one model thats very bullish on the temps bringing upper 90s to south Jersey, 100s to Mid Atlantic and low 90s to us.
