Well, that is quite cold. Even we haven't gone below 5 C.
Wow.. 5C for a low in summer is pretty cold... don't think Vancouver has ever gotten that cold in July...

Yep was quite shocked when I saw it. 3.5C at Melbourne Airport in Summer... wtf?????? However, closer to the bay the low temps were more in the 9-10C range. Still unusually cold, but it's not 3.5C!

Still, it's not unique. Portland, Vic recorded a 1.6C in the middle of summer a couple of years back with nearby Heywood and Mortlake even colder! These are towns are near sea level, and in the case of Portland, smack bang on the coast!

Nothing unusual here.

Our summer record lows are just above freezing. At the Botanical Gardens site: 0.6 C in Dec 1879, 1.1 C in Jan 1906 and 1.2 C in Feb 1879.

At the airport: 0.1 C in Dec 2006, 3.1 C in Jan 1959 and 1.5 C in Feb 2003.

Note that the airport records only go back to the 50's, so colder temps probably occured before then.

Interesting that Vancouver's record summer lows are warm than ChCh despite being more than five degrees further from the equator and connected to a vast arctic landmass.

I can't think of any other climate at a similar latitude that has comparably cold summer record lows as my city. This is truly a sub-antarctic climate.

Let's not get started on Buxton. It's snowed and gone below freezing here in June. Yuck.

It's been cool in Victoria, but this type of weather (I mean cool temps for a couple of weeks) is normal for December. The real summer weather doesn't start until January.

3.5C at Melbourne airport is very low. Some of the low-elevated places in NE Victoria had lows of 3C last night too, with highs around 23C.

Coldest start to December in 16 years apparently.

Nothing normal about this cold. Went for a walk this afternoon, and had to wear a thick jumper and tracksuit pants to be comfortable. Melbourne has yet to exceed 22C this month, with overnight lows around 8-10C, and sub-5C lows in some inland suburbs, colder than the July averages. In Sydney, it's been the coldest start to summer in 51 years. Pathetic. A couple of days of warmth, then yet more cold BS to look forward to by the weekend and next week and people in Sydney and Melbourne are getting pissed at the lack of warmth etc

In 41 years? What about the time when it snowed in Melbourne on Christmas day back in 2006?

Melbourne shivers at Christmas | Herald Sun

I guess the temperature must have been near 3.5 C o lower.

Well, Mar del Plata comes close though still warmer (at 38 S). The lowest record for January in the period 1961-1990 is -0.2 C (31.6 F), and the absolute lows every January, or at least every summer, are around 5 C to 8 C.

Mar del Plata has gotten 5 C on January 1st 2009, and 4 C on January 19 of the same year.

All these data taken from tutiempo.net.

That's actually incorrect. There was no snow in Melbourne on Christmas Day 2006, however, there were some significant hail showers. The max temp that day was around 14C. The snow fell in the Dandenong hills, at about 600m elevation. It was an unusual event, the coldest christmas on record. The 3.5C last night at the airport is a December record, this occured as 5 days of cold temps and clear skies allowed the temp to drop. Snow has never been recorded at Melbourne Airport in its 41 years of operation.

Parts of the Nullabour plain can get temps that low in summer aswell, with huge diurnal ranges. I suppose that is a consequence of a dry desert climate wedged between the hot desert and cold ocean. One of the biggest temp ranges recorded in Australia occured in Eyre, Western Australia where a dawn temp of 7C (43F) rose to 44C (111F) in the afternoon.

Prove it! Until you do, it's nothing more than a speculative claim in support of your agenda.
