Try going north and higher in elevation.

Windham in the Catskills at 1600 feet isn't bad:

WINDHAM 3 E, NEW YORK - Climate Summary

go another 1000 feet and it gets better:

SLIDE MOUNTAIN, NEW YORK - Climate Summary

Or Adirondacks:

LAKE PLACID 2 S, NEW YORK - Climate Summary

Or 2000 feet in the White Mtns:

PINKHAM NOTCH, NEW HAMPSHIRE - Climate Summary

So my strategy this year is to gut out the whole summer here and wait to go up north in early autumn, when I can pretty much count on decent weather.
Aim for leaf change season up north.

Thanks for the suggestions, I might orient my next trip in that direction (more east and higher elevation). I'd like to avoid "peak season" if possible though, so maybe I'll aim for like mid-late September, and I can do my leaf-peeping down here in November...lol.

And by the way RWood - don't send me anymore abusive emails - do that again once more and I will forward it on to the local police station. Just be careful of what you have typed and remember this is Australia so you have been warned!!!

I'm having trouble deciding if that is a threat or the Australian version of "This! Is! Sparta!" .

And you happen to be an expert because you've asked all of Sydney's 4 million residents?

He doesn't understand the difference between "critical" and "abusive". We used to correspond on quite good terms, BTW. His "threat" is an attempt to deflect attention from valid points.

"Any more"? I'm not sure what part of the phrase "final communication" he doesn't understand ...

Or maybe they just don't enjoy most outdoor activities in cold weather because they don't enjoy cold weather, because of their preferences like me. After all this thread's about "enjoying" the weather outdoors. I'm sure these people aren't deterred from their everyday essential outdoor activities just cos it's cold.

I for one hate going outside to do things like walks or sitting out to eat or drink (which is very enjoyable in summer) because I don't like to dress up in extra layers to be comfortable outside and don't like the feel of the cold air. Going by the numbers of extra people the recent warm weather brought outside compared to the usual rubbish, that's the same for them also. That's their preference and it don't make em any more weak and pathetic that someone who doesn't do certain outdoor activities because it's too warm/hot.

However, even I've been known to go out sledging on the slopes around here in the snow, shame for me I also got hypothermia for the one and only time in my life.

The worst things about warm weather bringing people out is the chavs that seem to enjoy it and loiter around the neighborhood trying to be threatening.. oh yes and the flies.

I'm much the same way. I've been known to engage in swimming and water sports, though there are some years where I don't and it's far from my favorite activity. Besides, a geothermally heated pool is better than one heated by hot temperatures (at least it is for me). I've also been known to hang towels and other laundry outside during hairdryer winds. One might as well get the most use possible out of all weather conditions, including the hated types.
