That's strange. NOAA shows the state of New Jersey as only slightly below normal for the month of November. In fact, NOAA shows that November of 2012 was NINETEENTH coldest, leaving 18 Novembers colder, not 6.

I've noticed you posting about Chicago's warmth and lack of snow, yet you jump on Cambium for talking about a top ten coldest November in Newark.

Why do you try so hard to downplay below average anomalies? A 1/3rd of the country have a below average November is nothing to scoff at. I'm not denying it was above average in the other 2/3rds.

This is a November thread, not a general 2012 or weather thread

I wasn't jumping on anyone, it was a legitimate observation. I think that it was noteworthy and more significant that the entire state was somehow considerably not as cold as a single city.

I use Chicago a lot for several reasons. It is a centrally located Midwestern city that is known for harsh winters. I also use it because I follow Tom Skilling on FB and he provides a lot of good daily insights on what is happening there. Chicago was the bull's eye for the now infamous winter forecast that Accuweather made for the 2011-2012 winter forecast. It is also the 3rd largest city in the country. If it is frigid in Chicago, it's most likely that the central part of the country is having a bad winter. The opposite goes if there is record warmth, and there has been.

I'm just trying to provide a balanced view, and yes, I do have a warm bias. My bias, however is based on past data and trends, not wishful thinking and hoping for a real blockbuster cold winter.

Lastly, I don't downplay the cold anomalies if they are persistent and encompass most of the country. We just have not had that in the recent decades, with very minor exceptions.
