That all oceanic climates are cold, windy and rainy for 365 days a year, and the sun might come out once per decade.

That NYC is "frigid", "brutally cold", "arctic like" and all the other adjectives you come up with to describe any continental winter. I didn't know that I braved the climate of Antarctica every year growing up here.

Recently the media has been using the term "hot" and its variations to describe the warmer than average temps in July.

Since when are low 20's celcius days and average highs of 16C "hot"?

I feel the opposite. TV News here talk about "polar wave" when temp outside goes down 14c

give me a break! 14c "polar"? as in from the POLE?? yeah, right

just say temps are gonna be "colder than average" but polar?? the other day it was supposed to be "the coldest day of the year" and they were all over the news talking about how cold and polar it was gonna be. That day i was outside walking with hat and gloves (???) in a very warm very sunny non windy 16celsius day wanting to kill myself cause i was feeling too hot with all the clothes and the hat and the gloves!

When the temps are AVERAGE here, they report how cold it is. Sensationalism wins ratings.

I haven't read the entire thread so forgive me if this has been covered.

I've had people tell me that "the relative humidity is 110% today." No, it's not. I try to explain to them what relative humidity is and they still disagree, telling me they've heard it all their lives so it must be possible.

Yea that's pretty dumb. Many different factors go into whether a place is either colder or warmer, and latitude is only one of those things. Go north of Anchorage during summer, for example. Once you hit the interior, you'll start experiencing much warmer temperatures.
