Of course that is a silly statement. Agreed. All one need do is visit the UK in October, January, July and April and they would know how silly that sounds. The UK is def a 4 season climate. It is just that the seasons are more mild and less pronounced than here.
Even if temps don't move a lot, just the fact that the sun is in different positions in the sky changes things in heavily maritime climates.
I wouldn't say you have colder winters looking at the data.
Well I just looked at the last 10 years in Philadelphia airport and it is warmer than here in alot of the years. It seems to go up and down dramatically, but it is inclusively cold like they like to make it look.
2013 - 7.7c avg high
2012 - 9.1c
2011 - 3.6c which is coldish.
2010 - 6c average high here was like 1c.
2009 - 2.9c
2008 - 8c
2007 - 9.3c
2006 - 10.8c
2005 - 5.2c
2004 - 1.5c - now that is an acceptable average.
2003 - 2.7c
I haven't found ANYTHING you've said insulting, I think you're absolutely correct in reference to summer temperatures. In fact I've actually been defending what you've said.
Our summer temps are more akin to spring in much of the US, as everybody knows.
And your coldest winter month is more like late November/early December here. In fact, I don't think there is anywhere in the UK that has a coldest month as cold as our warmest winter month, which is December. The average yearly temp in S. England and my area is almost the same. Somewhere in the mid 50's I believe. So we really do just balance out the summers and winters.
I would like to see you give us some winter warmth, and will give you some summer heat and both have the exact same temps year round.
Philadelphia's winters are too mild for me. Colder on average than here, although this year it had higher average maximums and was considerably milder than here in December 2012.

Makes no sense to me, as it seems you are mixing average highs with monthly means. Seems you are just trying to prove a silly point about being colder than here in winter.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, but how on earth would you know? You haven't spent a single winter here or even a few weeks in winter. It will feel and be colder than anything you have ever experienced in England.
Don't play dumb.. I think we all know that isn't what you said. Please go back a few pages to see what your original comment was. It certainly wasn't anything like that.
Why don't you quote me word for word.
If you are referring to that image, BIG DEAL. UK summers are horrible IMO.
Maybe next time I should say, I want to tell how I truly feel about Portsmouth summers but I won't so that I don't upset the feelings of some people
What else am I to think of a summer where the average high in July is closer to my average lows, where in Portsmouth, a good majority of the day temperatures would be spent in the 60's since the average high is only 71F. You might like it and that's fine by me. I don't and apparently that isn't fine by you. Tom might not like Chicago winters and think they are awfully cold. I think they could be better by being colder and snowier..

It's silly the avg high for those months. The avg mean is worthless.
