The best Mediterranean climates are found in the Mediterranean. The Californian and WA Med climates are too dry (humidity, not rainfall), whereas the original version has high dew points.
The best Mediterranean climates in my opinion are Lampedusa, and Ceuta.
Wow, I haven't answered yet. Although I'm not a fan of Mediterranean climates (I prefer summers to be quite rainy, because I like greenery and winters to be snowy), I prefer coastal California because of least hot summers.
I'd have to pick the mediterranean basin. SW Australia's winters are too mild (it's still like 23°C there) and Coastal California... too mild overall. Climates like Rome, Madrid and Naples are some good examples.
Sacramento is the king of Mediterranean climates. Firstly, that summer sunshine is the most plentiful of any city in the world. Those temperatures may seem high but Sacramento has a nice dry heat compared to coastal areas.
