What is causing the freezing air to push down to as far as the Gulf Coast (snow, hot)

"Meteorologists attribute the “polar vortex” to freezing air from the North Pole being pushed down to as far as the Gulf Coast of the U.S."
What's causing this? Some high pressure system over Siberia?
Interesting stuff isn't it? As I always say, its a marriage of everything. It's rarely about just 1 thing.
Take a pick. Ridge out West. Warming stratosphere. 500mb flow. Negative EPO/WPO. Warming Nino regions in Pacific. Strong storm system in North Atlantic, ect ect.
Could be so many reasons. even something in Europe. Maybe something was going on there in the fall that prevented these polar vortexs to keep dropping in North America. (It's been happening since November) It's just more pronounced now because after all its January. A piece of the upper air from the arctic is breaking off as I pointed out in this post.
The upper air wave pattern steers storm systems and high pressure systems, and in turn, determines air flow right down to the surface. The wave pattern shifts east or west and where it lies at a particlular time (as well as its amplitude) determines the weather patterns including how warm or cold places will be.
Western and central Europe seem to be having a mild winter. Temps near 45 for well over a week in places like Poland - not bad for this time of the year.
The real question in all this is whether or not the wave pattern will shift. Only time will tell.
This winter bears strong resemblances to the one of 2008-09. 2009 was characterized by a very cool and wet spring and summer across the eastern two-thirds of North America, while the area west of the Rockies was blazing hot and dry. I hope we won't see a repeat this year.

Actually thats awful for this time of the year.
Yes the pattern will change in the next few weeks. Europe will cool down significantly and USA will warm up alot.
You can see that southern Canada gets into positive upper territory. Greenland is much more blocked.

I hope not.. I am preferring this mild weather we are having, don't even need a coat when it has been 12C/54F most of the last month!
I don't mind snow so much, but other than that I hate the cold. I am thankful that we have the gulf stream which prevents us from getting really cold in winter!

Yeah hopefully. Some Models already show some impressive 850s temperatures over Germany by next week. Okay eight days to go still.. but looks good..
