Both are approximately 580 meters asl, both are relatively dry but not arid, both are located 350 km away from the nearest Mediterranean coast.
Thus, Madrid is located 550 km away from the nearest Atlantic ocean coast, whereas Clermont-Ferrand is located 435 km away from it:
^^ Speaking convective rainfall, Clermont-Ferrand got 12 mm from a thunderstorm today.
As ofr the battle, it's a tough decision. Madrid's summer temps are much better, but I really don't like dry summers. I prefer Clermont's more "abundant" precipitation and slightly cooler, significantly duller winters. So Clermont it is.
It has warmed up a bit, with temps now 7.6/-0.1°C in January and 26.5/14.0°C in July.
It gets 1913 hours of sun per year, ranging between 249 in July and 69 hours in December.

It isn't, the weather station is located 330 m asl and the city averages around 360 m. Only the highest parts reach 600 m, but their averages would be different.

Oops, that's my fault.
Anyway, it is more elevated than most of Frech territory.
