January 1977 was above average here, but at the same time below the median since the majority of Januaries are warmer than average. 60% of Januaries are warmer than average.
The winter of 1976-77 was one of the coldest here.
3rd coldest here and the very next winter ended up 2nd coldest. I was in kid heaven. lol Always getting yelled about staying outside without a jacket on.

I take it that records began in the late 1950s? Even still, I surprised at how many 10 ten finishes you've had in the past 20 years! We haven't had a top 10 ten coldest winter since 1978/79. Since 1890, our 10 coldest winters all fall between 1915/16 and 1978/79.
January 77 was the coldest on record here. Monthly mean 20F. Yikes.
Whoa, Bridgeport January 1977 Average was 23.7° (5th coldest). So Philly had a colder January that year than here?

The winter of 1976-1977 was the coldest winter on record in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a monthly mean temperature of 20.7 degrees Fahrenheit, and the next winter after that the year of the 1978 blizzard that paralyzed indianapolis was good for 2nd coldest on record with a monthly mean temperature of 21.8 degrees Fahrenheit; last winter was just 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the winter of 1978-1979, with a monthly mean temperature for last winter in indianapolis at 24.2 degrees Fahrenheit, good for 8th coldest on record, even the winter of 1935-1936 was quite a bit colder than last winter in indianapolis, that winter was colder by 1 degree Fahrenheit, but the last winter was the snowiest on record in Indianapolis with a 3 month total snowfall of 52.2 inches, breaking the previous record of 51 inches set In 1981-1982.
Well, mangroves are at the coast where temperatures never get too cold. Even if they are damaged by a freeze, they usually recover. Rockland plants are probably at greater risk being inland. Sometimes I wish a hard freeze would come along and wipe out some of the non-natives up here.
what non natives are you worried about? mango's, Bananas, etc? hey didn't you guys get to freezing in 2010? here it depended in what neighborhood you were. My area got close to it, temp fell to 34f(1c) we had frost and all but my coconut and mango's tree's survived. in the southwest though where my aunt lives the temp fell to 30f and killed her coconut tree. I don't want any other winters like that.
