Lexington can do that without help from a lake.

It depends..

Lake Michigan does protect the immediate Chicago area from tornado occurrences in some weather situations, but in other situations it can actually enhance severe thunderstorm and tornado development. Tornadic thunderstorms will sometimes weaken or dissipate as they approach the city area if chilly, stable Lake Michigan-cooled air has overspread the city. At other times, though, the inland lake-breeze boundary acts as a cold front that initiates or intensifies thunderstorms. In still other situations, hot humid air that energizes thunderstorms extends to the lakeshore and even out over the water.

Kinda crazy once you think about it, but the Great Lakes are at the same latitude as the northern potions of the Meditarrean Sea. Syracuse is at the same latitude as Bastia. Duluth is at the same latitude as Trieste. Too bad that the Great Lakes climate is like a million times worse than that of the Mediterranean. It would be amazing if the Great Lakes had a mediterranean type climate, Rochester New York would be like a palm-filled paradise and the northern reaches of Lake Superior would be like Milan or Genoa

North America is the quintessential geography and climate fail. You couldn't design a more cold prone continent if you tried. Worst geography on planet earth without doubt. Worst climates too given the latitude.

What about Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, or Panama? Or, what if the proneness to cold is temporary?

They are a tiny little parcel of North America. Hardly representative of what the vast majority of North America endures in winter.

North America west of the Rockies is quite a large chunk of continent that doesn't endure anything crazy, relative to the latitude. East of the Rockies, the coastal South is a significant chunk of land, where real crazy winter conditions is only seen on the TV screen.

What a dumb forecast! Boring marine layer and monotonous mild temperatures.
