since 2007,the most incredible is because that place lies on the tropics,a bit further north of Capricorn Tropic but it do.
temperature still falling there :
Damn, the country record low are -14C,only 3.6C ahead, but that dont will happen, the lowest it can get with this cold air mass are -12C, just because it are on the tropics,if this place were more to the South around 30S,im sure it could get even -20C.
Overlook on South America,now 03:26am :

Lowest Temperature on the country this morning was -13.3C on the Itatia National Park, thats insane, just 0.7C behind the country all time record low of -14C registered in Caçador back to the 50s.
this all happened because of the Dry air, caused by an High pressure who are affecting the Southeast on the last days.
Also Between Towns, the lowest was -5.4C in Urupema/SC.
European Model increase the negative anomalies to Southeastern South America for the period of 18-23 august :

It's kinda crazy how between Concepcion and going all the way to Lima the coastal climate barely changes. The difference between average highs in Concepcion and Lima is just 5c!

While that,in next week, subtropical climates of Southeastern South America will face temperatures close or below freezing.
Jet stream and the reason of why the Eastern Subtropical climates get colder, look the winds coming from the dry and cold Patagonia, while on the Chilean coast it comes from the mild Ocean.

mm The min in Rio was 14ºC today?? thermodynamically temperature decrease around 2ºC every 300m. So, if Itatiaia is at 2500m, a difference above 18ºC with RÃo seems pretty dubious unless they're affected by different air masses. So i would take that station reports with a grain of salt.
...
Nice day here, very spring like. Max of 22ºC and i did a bit of jogging on t-shirt

As ghost likin posted, it snowed in southern Patagonia. Not only in Tierra del Fuego, but also in Santa Cruz province cities. RÃo Gallegos:

Also Ushuaia had its first negative max of the year: -0.5ºC

Not only the 300m difference count, this Station on Itatiaia are situated at a "hole",surrounded by higher grounds, and as you know, the dense cold are deposited on this, making it colder even than higher elevations, anothers factors like humidity(was very low there this dawn) associated with clear skies and calm wind helped this very low temperature ,while in Rio,situated at the coast, not counted with thoses factors.
This same thing happened on early june in Southern Brazil, the town of Soledade(600m),registered colder temperature than others higher towns like São Joaquim(1300m),just because of the same situation I posted above.

Ive never seen a forecast to keep an Southern Hemisphere Town for 10 consecutive days below freezing, this are the forecast for Tolhuin,TF ,that because of its high latitude and oceanic nature, with a good Antarctic flow there, that can happen :
Gfs Last run was amazing,-10C on 850mb in Southern Brazil and negative crossing the Tropics:
Cold Antarctic Airflow blowing on Southern South America and the Falklands, most of towns there had highs close or below freezing today,Stanley are reporting snow showers, with high today of only 0C.
