A storm system off the coast of the Southeast United States
will move north overnight and rapidly intensify as it approaches
the coast of southern New England on Thursday.
991mb low off the Carolina coast will track NE
overnight with clouds lowering and thickening.
FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... ** Dangerous cold for Friday night into Sunday morning. **
Arctic high pressure slowly builds into the region Friday night
through Sunday. Dry weather will prevail, however the coldest airmass this season so far is expected to move in. 850mb temperatures are forecast to drop to around -25C Friday night into Saturday morning. Decent agreement among various models regarding
high and low temperatures through the weekend, but leaned towards the colder side of guidance given the anticipated snow cover.
For Friday night into Saturday morning, winds and temperatures will
combine for wind chill values ranging mostly from -15 to -25. A wind
chill advisory will likely be needed eventually for the entire
area. Winds during this period around 20 mph and gusting to around
30 mph. Friday night`s lows will be in the single digits for coastal
sections and zero to -5 across much on the interior, and highs
Saturday only 8 to 15 above. With lighter winds Saturday night, low
temperatures drop to 0 to 5 above for coastal spots and 0 to 5 below
for most inland areas. A wind chill advisory could be needed again
for some of these inland spots.
Extreme movements of the jetstream have always been a part of existing climate variability in the US and other Northern latitude countries that have a vast mid-continental area. But it is far too early to associate this with climate change. Many more observations will be needed to detect if this is the result of changes in global circulation patterns in the US and elsewhere.
The coldest it has gotten so far this winter in the city of Indianapolis has been -12 F( both of the main reporting stations representing the city of Indianapolis, which would be Marion County recorded lows of -12 F, but I suspect the low temperatures through out the city limits not including those two stations, I feel that some of the frost hollows within Marion County May have gotten as cold as -12 F to -14 F. And Indianapolis is still expecting a few more nights of sub zero cold temperatures before temperatures moderate back to near normal this weekend or early next week.
We are expected to see temps down in the low teens or single digits thru Sunday morning for lows and highs only in the 20's. That's brutal for eastern NC where normally it rarely gets under 20.
High of 45 F today. Dewpoints are running extremely low now, down near 0 F. Tonight's forecast calls for a low of 18 F which would be the coldest of the season so far.
We have an outdoor fatbike event on Saturday that we pushed back to Sunday....With a forecasted high of -9ºF, we felt the forecasted high of 5ºF on Sunday was more amenable to being outside.
