It’s well established that the European weather model, on average, produces the most accurate weather forecasts in the world. The current, operational version of the American GFS model had just about the worst forecast performance at every step.
American HWRF model, which is a specialized model for hurricanes, also performed poorly, ranking second to last.
Even America's upgraded weather forecast model - the new version of the Global Forecasting System, lags behind Europe and it won't help the agency gain much ground against its international rivals for the title of having the world's most accurate weather model.
Why are we so bad at it?
