While the Deep South received snow a few days ago New England was hammered with an ice storm. What caused the setup that led to the destructive icing event over several states?
1) The track of the low stayed onshore near the coast which pulled in humid sub-tropical air in the warm sector of the storm.
2) The ridging in the southeast that continues is the result of the postive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation which is a good indicator of pressure differentials over Iceland. When the NAO is in its positive phase cold air is generally lacking in the Northeast as well as the potential for large coastal snowstorms.

The models show a general trend toward colder air across most of the country next week with more chances for snow in areas that have missed out so far. Some locations have seen less than two inches so far for the season, and I would generally predict a solid eight inches in general for areas of New England the rest of the month.

Well, the 0Z GFS model is not too favorable in the shorter range- out to seven days. The cold air just does not push far enough to the east to allow for decent snow chances. Luckily, the weather will cooperate with the cleanup from the ice storm here in NH for tomorrow.
