wow kaykay, that is warm. We finally hit 60 today, but it is windy and overcast and feels much colder. A frontal system is supposed to hit tonight and storms tomorrow, boy howdy! Anyone care to share an unbrella with me at the games? My fingers are crossed that they will be postponed because of weather...sigh
And you know we'd do it too! When I went out at lunch, it was 81 already!
My car was 81 F in the cabin tonight,
yet with winter humidity being low,
I did not need to remove my large winter coat to stay comfortable.
(hangs below my butt and sleeves past my wrists) on my 40 minute drive home.)
First consider your latitude... Most places labelled "southen U.S." are below the 36th parallel.

No Texas is different because of not only being south, it's also southwest. (and drier tends to lead to higher temps)
Also places like Dallas would be closer to the ocean if they were further east, so it is slightly south of a lot of areas encompassed by the saying "southeastern U.S." And Texas is a BIG state, where going from north to central TX, or central to southern TX makes a bigger difference than states to the east. In central NC, roughly at the 35th parallel, my friends from there tell me that summer starts in late April or early May and lasts until late-September or early October. (essentially, 5 months) Most part of the southeast like southern AR, central MS, AL, GA or SC would have summer last about 6 months a year. Places that have very long summers are usually past the 30th parallel, roughly the northern limit of the Gulf of Mexico.
*If Melbourne's latitude (37.5 degrees?) was in the South, it would still have the same annual average temp,
but it's winters would average about 8/-2 C and summers about 31/20 C; stronger seasonal variation.
Yes, as CC said, Texas encompasses a lot of area. There are differences in temp within the state. ILNC, actually does have it warmer in Houston than I do up in Dallas. I grew up in Lubbock Texas in what's called the Panhandle. The climate there was quite a bit cooler than Dallas and some other areas of the state. We actually got some significant snow with some regularity (not like up North, of course.) And it was generally about 5-10 degrees cooler than Dallas I think.
My kids used to have a storybook, titled And The Snow Kept Falling. They were only allowed to read in July & August.....and as I look out the living room window, the snow keeps falling..........(again. some more. still.)
They talked about Texas on TWC last night. They listed several cities along with the temps yesterday. Most of them weren't familiar like Dallas or Houston or Fort Worth. They did mention that the temps were very high for this early in the year and they said you could be in for a long, hot summer.
I think they are both trying to use euphamisms and at the same time, be 1/2 accurate.
They say the same thing in Toronto, "..looks like it might be a long winter..."
when we've never really had a short winter,
and even our medium length winters have most residents moaning about how long it is.
Well, I think what they're saying for their prediction is this~Instead of 40 days of 110 degree temps, they're looking at 50 days of 115 degree temps.
But ya know they have been wrong before. TWC said we were supposed to get an inch of snow today. Our local radio station said 3 to 5 inches of snow. If you take the radio station's high number, that may be pretty accurate and it's STILL snowing.
Sometimes the predictions are amazing! We got an inch of snow on top of a layer of sleet last night!
Every hour they were changing the line of where the rain/snow mix would be. They started out saying 8-10" then maybe only 6", finally 3"!!! It was pretty funny. I liked the thunder part though, made me think of Spring!

Not sure if we were mentioned, but my mother lives in Pasadena (Houston), TX and she has complained it hasn't been warm enough. It's kind of true. They were going to hit above 80° for the first time since I think January 3. But we down here in the Rio Grande Valley have hit 80, 10 times in January and 7 in February. You know how the last three days have been here: 91°, 93°, and 101°! We hit 90° once in january too. At least a cool down will put us in the 70s for 3 days.
