It is a cultural thing...the Masai live very long lives and the American Indian did too until the white men came here...
I'm astounded at the members of my own generation who do not have teeth because they did not take care of them by brushing...It's just good manners to brush after every meal...who can stand leaving that debris in ones mouth? yuk! and teaching regular hygene: Its not done on any level any more, personal cleanliness, shots, ect. It's an attitude of ignorance.

I'll try to respond to all the posts here.

DK, I wasn't concerned about you. No offense. But I have no doubt that you can take care of yourself and your family.

And yes, of course, everyone puts their family's well being first.

And I am happy to hear that you volunteer and contribute to charitable causes.

As for stress, it is a given of life. Not all stress is bad. Stress that makes you perform better or motivates you is considered good stress. It can be the nervousness before an important job interview. Excitement over getting married or buying a new home. So I doubt your life is stress free.

I find it ironic that you advise everyone to move to WV yet your children have chosen to live elsewhere. You have told people with children that WV is the finest state to raise them. I guess that only applies if they get graduate degrees and then find jobs in other states.

Big Al, I really don't know ANYONE who doesn't brush their teeth. In my job, I go into people's homes every day. I've been in every holler and on every mountaintop in this county. I've been in fine homes and shacks. And unless those toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste in the bathrooms are for decoration, I assume people are using them.

I know for myself, I brush and floss and visit the dentist and I have had two root canals and crowns. I call them my second mortgage teeth because each cost $1200. That is hardly affordable for anyone, myself included, and I practice good dental hygiene. Heck, I don't even eat sweets.

And everyone knows someone who has done this or that. It's all anecdotal and once again I will state that these people are a minority.

Smoking and chewing are problems and serious health issues. We have commercials on local TV where the tag line is "Don't pass down spit tobacco."

Unfortunately, I think those who smoke or chew are unlikely to stop without some kind of intervention. It is an addiction. That could be a heart attack. I've known people who went to the ER and never picked up another cigarette.

Let's say a pack of cheap cigarettes is $2.50 and a person smokes a pack a day. That's $70 a month. I don't know what parallel universe you live in where you can get private health insurance that cheap.

I think the key lies with educating young people and stopping them before they start.

Obesity is another issue. It leads to heart disease and diabetes.

Unfortunately, the reality of modern life is people just don't have time or money to prepare nutrious meals. It is just easier and cheaper to stop at Mickey D's.

The median income in WV according the US Census Bureau is $37,227. The only state poorer is Mississippi. So you're saying a family living on that should be able to not only pay for health insurance but visit a dentist every six months to have their teeth cleaned?

I guess the main difference between us is that I do not judge other people. I don't condemn the pillhead who broke into my house and stole from me anymore than I do the morbidly obese people I see on the street. I have not walked in their shoes and I cannot begin to fathom why they made the choices they did.

I have not had an easy life and I am proud of where I have gotten basically on my own. But I do not jump up and down and wave my arms yelling "Hey, look at me. If I did it, you can."

Because I don't give myself all the credit. I have fallen and I've gotten back up. I will never know if I lifted myself or if Someone helped me. And the greatest mystery will always be why me and why not someone else.

Because in the end, it's just one big crap shoot. And if you think bad things can't happen to good people, you're wrong. Sometimes over and over again. If someone at some point fails to bounce back, then I hope I can be there to lend a helping hand and a sympathetic ear. Not lecture them on "personal responsibility."

Millersangel: Don't think my kids don't get a good preaching from time to time about the opportunity in Wv. When they were little children in the mid 80's Wv was a dismal swamp of opportuntiy and I did not think anything would be here for them. I taught them too well. Now, it is one of the last places of goodness in the plastic walmart world that is becoming America. They are seeing that life is more than a lot of money in the bank and a lot of STUFF...and the yearnings to return are beginng to sprout.

I'm hoping the debate that ensues from this blog will force out some unknown idea or thought that can be used to help people on some greater basis or venue. The contributors to this blog are very intelligent and bring a wealth of experience to the table from other geographical areas...A plan always begins with a premise...prove the premise and test the plan...no one in this blog should be offended...we should be above that...

millersangel,
OK,I'LL WRITE BIG SO U'LL DISTINGUISH YOUR TEXT FROM MINE

>Big Al, I really don't know ANYONE who doesn't brush their teeth. <>IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY DO NOT EXIST.

>Smoking and chewing are problems and serious health issues. We have >commercials on local TV where the tag line is "Don't pass down spit >tobacco."<>
>I think the key lies with educating young people and stopping them before >they start.
SO, YOU THINK ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY TOO.
<>
>Unfortunately, I think those who smoke or chew are unlikely to stop without >some kind of intervention. It is an addiction. .
THE SAME TIME YOU HAVE A TENDENCY TO BLAME THE 3D PARTIES FOR DIFFERENT PROBLEMS
BTW IT IS POSSIBLE TO QUIT SMOKING WITHOUT ANY INTERVENTION AND IT IS RECOMMENDED TO DO IT THAT WAY.

>Let's say a pack of cheap cigarettes is $2.50 and a person smokes a pack a >day. That's $70 a month. I don't know what parallel universe you live in >where you can get private health insurance that cheap.
YOU CAN GET IT FOR 100-120 WITH BIG DEDUCTIBLE IF YOU ARE NONSMOKER

>Obesity is another issue. It leads to heart disease and diabetes.

>Unfortunately, the reality of modern life is people just don't have time or >money to prepare nutrious meals. It is just easier and cheaper to stop at >Mickey D's.
THIS IS ANOTHER EXUSE FOR LAZYNESS, STUPIDITY AND IRRESPONSIBILITY

>The median income in WV according the US Census Bureau is $37,227. The >only state poorer is Mississippi. So you're saying a family living on that >should be able to not only pay for health insurance but visit a dentist every >six months to have their teeth cleaned?
READ ABOVE ABOUT INSURANCE. BTW TEETH CLEANING IS MADE BY DENTAL HYGIENIST AND ISN'T EXPENSIVE AT ALL, ALSO U CAN DO IT LESS OFTEN OR JUST FLOSS 3 TIMES A DAY

>I guess the main difference between us is that I do not judge other people. >I don't condemn the pillhead who broke into my house and stole from me >anymore than I do the morbidly obese people I see on the street. I have >not walked in their shoes and I cannot begin to fathom why they made the >choices they did.
YOU DON'T NEED TO WALK IN THEIR SHOES IN ORDER TO HAVE YOUR OPINION. YES, THEY HAD THEIR OWN PROBLEMS AND REASONS TO BE WHERE THEY ARE NOW BUT- DIDN'T THEY HEAR THAT DRUGS ARE BAD? DIDN'T THEY READ WARNINGS ON CIGARETTE PACKS? DIDN'T THEY HEAR ABOUT OBESITY'S RISKS?

>I have not had an easy life and I am proud of where I have gotten basically >on my own. But I do not jump up and down and wave my arms yelling "Hey, >look at me. If I did it, you can."
WHY NOT?I AM NOT ASHAMED OF MY OWN WAY FROM $5/H TO MY OWN BUSINESS.I COULD DO IT OTHER PEOPLE CAN DO IT TOO.I AM NOT AN EXCEPTION.

>Because I don't give myself all the credit. I have fallen and I've gotten back >up.
THE SAME IS HERE. I AM THE SAME PHOENIX LIKE YOU ARE. BUT I GIVE ALL CREDITS TO MYSELF. I MADE IT. I SUCCEED. I DIDN'T GIVE UP. I WAS NOT LAZY.I BARELY HAD ENOUGH MONEY FOR FOOD BUT NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT APPLYING FOR PUBLIC ASSISTANCE.I GOT BACK-WASN'T IT PAYBACK FOR MY HARD WORK AND A STRONG SPIRIT?

>Because in the end, it's just one big crap shoot. And if you think bad things >can't happen to good people, you're wrong.
THEY CAN HAPPEN, AGREE
>If someone at some point fails to bounce back, then I hope I can be there >to lend a helping hand and a sympathetic ear. Not lecture them on "personal >responsibility."
IT DOESN'T CANCEL EACH OTHER. HELPING HAND AND SYMPATHETIC EAR DON'T SUBSTITUTE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
YOU GIVE A FISH TO A HUNGRY MAN I GIVE HIM A FISHING ROD.
THIS IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US.
BUT I DO NOT SEE YOU AS MY ENEMY WE ARE JUST IN TWO DIFFERENT CAMPS, I AM IN A CAPITALIST ONE YOU ARE IN A SOCIALIST ONE.
IF I CONTINUE TO LECTURE PEOPLE ABOUT PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY I WILL PLANT A SEED OF RESPONSIBILITY IN SOME OF THEM. EVENTUALLY THEY WILL HELP THEMSELVES.

I don't consider myself a socialist. Lord knows that experiment has failed over and over. Nor do I like big government. Or Big Brother. Sometimes I can't stand my own brother. J/K.

I don't know what I am to tell you the truth. LOL.

But agree with DK that most of the ideas on here are good and worthy of merit.

What was not taken from them in all of the adversity of the past 220 years was the faith in themselves. That is possibly the failing of this nation in this time. It is broadcast far and near that everything is bad...It's always been bad and then it gets good...It goes in a circle because everything that is driven in a capitalist society and economy is cyclic. I'm an American...I want it this way because it makes me as hard as flint and steel. If I become the conqueror of the adversity of my generation then I will be an example of success to those of my people who follow me.
We succeed because we will ourselves to succeed. Its a test of character. The meek of heart, the lazy and the lame of mind wanting everything to be given to them without work have no real place in this country...they should look elsewere...may I suggest Holland or Switzerland. Both welfare states on the brink of reigning in the financial insanity of the past 40 years. I would suggest China, Cuba, Venezula or Germany but they do not seem too popular. Wonder why?
Our country has always been a wreck too...the Roosevelt years, the Nixon years, the Kennedy years, the Carter years...the Regan and Bush Years and in the future the Obama years...It has found a way to go on inspite of its leadership. It will cointinue to do so.
Our duty, if we have one is to be the very best we can be and do the best we can do and put our hands back into our pockets. I don't want to provide health care for anyone but my family...I want to feed and clothe only them. That is my duty as a responsible family provider....Wait!!! One d*** minute...maybe thats the problem...we need to return the family...to its role...to its perspective and to its place.
I'm talking about a family...dad, mom, kids and the dog or cat. and perhaps even the roles that they examplified before we were forced to swallow all this socialistic dogma and propaganda.

Don't fret Kennedy. It's not going to be the Obama years.. Its going to be the Clinton years again, THANKFULLY!!!

I am sorry to interupt your great debate but I was wondering if there are many black families in or around Marlinton, WV?

Oh really? Clintons era is over. Obama's era is not here yet. It's a time for a real politician not a phony. Vote McCain.
