Hi,
I am considering moving to Charleston in the next 6 mos.
Is West Virginia considered part of the South? I am from the deep South and currently live in Lexington KY. The people here (Lexington) do not seem as friendly. People seem to really keep to themselves.
West Virginia used to be part of Virginia until the North-South split. West Virginia became West Virginia because it sided with the North. I doubt you could call that Southern.
You might want to check out that information. I learned it one day while introducing one friend from West Virginia to a friend from Virginia. I mentioned how close together they had lived. One was from Roanoke, VA, and the other was from Charleston, WV. The friend from Charleston said, "Yes we are close but they don't claim us." The friend from Roanoke said, "No, we don't." Then everybody in the room laughed. I haven't documented the information, but believe these two should have known their own state's history. Until that day, I really didn't know how these states came to be either.
The western counties of Virginia established a separate government when Virginia seceded from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War (the War of Northern Aggression, to Southerners).
On June 20th, 1863, West Virginia was admitted to the Union as the 35th state. June 20th is still celebrated yearly as "West Virginia Day".
Which is scarier, Mothman or the Braxton County Monster?
The Mason-Dixon Line is a poor line of demarcation. West Virginia is Appalachian, as HB says. Or Mountaineers, or Hillbillies. Some are Southern, some mid-western, some northerners, all are West (By God) Virginians.
