So difficult to say.
Been in White Plains since last Fall. The only crappy part of your commute will be transferring to the subway, but let me tell you - I ALWAYS get a seat at the White Plains stations. Being able to sleep all the way to GC or H125th is a blessing. You will always get a seat going or coming and the fact that WP is the first stop on all express trains means a smooth ride and quick ride.

Yes, I agree about getting a seat on the train! Makes the trip so much more pleasant. They always say it's not the destination but the journey. My husband thinks I'm crazy because pre-Covid I would switch from an express subway to a local (it's the last stop). The trip may take about 6 minutes longer but I always get a seat, which I never do on the express.

Yorktown, congratulations on selling your house and transitioning into retirement! It does seem like a conundrum. It seems like you love where you are currently living. But all of the three places you mention are lovely as well.

That's the one thing I really want -- to be able to enjoy breakfast out on a deck. It seems like a perfect way to start your day. It seems that you will probably get that no matter where you go. But the three areas you mentioned are all so different. Wishing you the best of luck with your decision. Guess you can always rent first before buying -- which is another thing I have contemplated for myself!

The beauty is you'll get that experience on an express or a local if White Plains is the destination or place you board

All of the wonderful thing Yorktown Gal says she experiences on her deck are while on my double deck as well - From the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Monarch Butterflies, etc. In Yorktown however, your money goes WAY further. White Plains I find is a nice balance between Suburban & Semi-Rural (In my area. There are many neighborhoods in White Plains which range from semi-urban to suburban to, extra suburban/semi-rural like Yorktown).

Either way, it is way more relaxing here NYC! In White Plains, you just get way more amenities!

We are empty nesters (though WFH) and just bought in South Salem/Lewisboro. It's probably more rural than you're looking for, but hiking trails galore (Ward-Pound Ridge Reservation & Mountain Lakes Park are literally within walking distance, or a very short car ride) and so peaceful. We aren't bar people, but do enjoy the myriad restaurant options, most of which have take-out or now are starting to open for on-site dining in some capacity. The bonus of where we are is that we are ~20 min from Danbury, right next to Ridgefield, and roughly 30 min to White Plains, depending on time of day. So we get the beauty and nature we love daily, while having lots of shopping/dining options relatively close by. When we eventually feel safe to head to the city for the things we love (e.g., B'way shows, museums, every type of restaurant we can think of), it's still close enough to be home relatively early. There's a vibrant art community in the Katonah-Lewisboro region as well. I don't think that we will suffer from boredom once the COVID restrictions are a memory and things reach a new 'normal.'

We have friends who retired from Orange county to Rye Brook. They live in one of those developments by the Westchester Airport, close to the border of White Plains. Thankfully, their house is heavily insulated so they don't hear the planes taking off. They are much happier there than in the county.

I am pretty sure their development provides regular bus service to the train station.

Rye Brook and White Plains have a lot going for it.

As others have said, Yonkers if you don't plan to have kids and want to be close to NYC. Crestwood has a direct train (normally), 26 minutes to GCT. Easy access to Bronx River Parkway (plus the trail).

I really am grateful for all of your responses. At this moment, I decided to not make a rash decision during this time of uncertainty. I'm certainly not discounting moving to Westchester in the future. But I'd like my decision to be based on thoughtfulness vs a reactionary one.

While I would love the outdoor space and quiet ambiance, there is something to be said about enjoying the energy of the city. I was having an outdoor dinner in Harlem last night, enjoying the buzz of people around me. Sometimes I witness things in the city that make me want to have my own quiet space in the woods. Other times, I appreciate its chaotic beauty. I really don't know what will happen in the future. But I'd feel more comfortable about making a decision like this when we are not living in a pandemic.
