Uh...no. The Smokey Mnts is mountain range and national park. They did not get their name because of smoke.....
Why is the Blue Ridge "blue"? According to "A Naturalist's Blue Ridge Parkway" by David Catlin, "it can be legitimately claimed that trees put the "blue" in Blue Ridge, for hydrocarbons released into the atmosphere by the forest contribute to the characteristic haze on these mountains and to their distinctive color." The entire Appalachian Chain is extraordinarily diverse and rich in its vegetation, so there is perhaps more "blue" to the Blue Ridge and more "smoky" to the Great Smoky Mountains.
Furthermore, when the warm gulf air meets up with the Appalachians cooler air it causes the Smokies to often be covered in a fog. http://www.nps.gov/blri/faqs.htm
Hello,
My husband and I are considering retiring in the Asheville area. Since we have lived in the Sierras and Rocky Mountains, which because of the drier air and less pollution has spectacular blue skies, we are concerned when we look at photos of the Asheville area: There never seems to be clean-air days---the air around the mountain landscapes is always hazy, and I have only found a couple of photos where there is a blue sky.
Is this from pollution or just from humidity and mist? And do you ever have days when you get a real "blue-sky" feeling?
Thanks so much for your info help.
Ummmm . . . Asheville is called "The Land of Sky".
WNC-hiker,
Was that just a joke, or is there a lot of smoke in the air some of the year?
We get a a lot of smoke in the air during winter when people use their fireplaces, and it is amazing how it can grow thick with haze. Many places are now banning any form of wood-burning stoves or fireplaces, and requiring new homes to put in only gas fireplaces.
Haha, maaan, that looks JUST like the field I pass every day. Everything, right down to that shed and the fence.
Josh, that's one of my favorite roads ever. it SO looks like driving through the austrian alps. well, just on a LITTLE lower elevation
