You won't see a lot of independent discussion on Zionville because it's hard to distinguish it from Boone. It doesn't have many stores, restaurants, etc. in its own right. Places like Zionville and Meat Camp have always been rural farming communities rather than towns in their own right.

That said, it's not that there's no sense of community in that area, but it's more "Western Watauga" than just "Zionville" or "Mabel." The places have names but they're just so small and spread out. Locals shop at the Cove Creek Store, there's a community center and library, and there's things like Farm Heritage Day and the monthly BBQ at the old Cove Creek High School (and the preservation of that historic building is probably the best example of the rural communities in Watauga County coming together)

One of my favorite hot sauces is from Zionville, NC. Check out Hot Sauces & Salsa - Apple Wood Smoked Habanero & Chipotle Peppers - Fire From The Mountain for details.
I am particularly fond of the smoked habanero. They have tamer varieties as well. Enjoy!
